The rainy season in Da Nang: choosing a place that stays dry and preparing as a renter

Rainy and storm season in Da Nang: how to choose a room that avoids flooding, a preparation checklist, and where to follow official warnings.

The rainy and storm season in central Vietnam is usually concentrated in the last months of the year, and Da Nang also gets spells of heavy rain that flood some streets. This post does not list individual flood spots because the situation changes after each round of infrastructure work. Instead, it shows you how to check for yourself, how to prepare, and where to follow official information.

Choosing a place that avoids flooding

  • Ask the neighbours: they are the most reliable source on the last flood and how high the water rose.
  • Look for marks on the walls: water lines, peeling paint, mould at the base of walls, cupboards or doors.
  • Compare heights: a floor lower than the street usually floods first; upper floors are less affected.
  • Check the way in and out: the whole street leading to the building, not only the room.
  • Parking: motorbikes parked on the ground floor are more likely to be flooded.

When you go to see a place, also use the viewing checklist.

Preparing before the rainy season

  • Fully charge your phone, power bank and torch.
  • Drinking water and dry food for a few days.
  • Basic medicines and important documents, kept in a waterproof bag.
  • Raise appliances and belongings off the floor or move them upstairs.
  • Unplug appliances when the water rises, and do not touch anything electrical during a flood.
  • Find a safe place to leave your motorbike, or move it to higher ground.
  • Save the phone numbers of your landlord, your neighbours and the emergency services.

Where to follow warnings

  • The national and regional hydro-meteorological services.
  • The information channels of the city People’s Committee and of your ward.
  • The residents’ group for your rental block or building.
