Moving house is when unexpected costs are most likely. This post explains how to get quotes, compare movers and avoid surprise fees. We do not have real price data yet, so the post gives no specific prices.
Getting a proper quote
- List your belongings (quantity, bulky items, fragile items).
- Give both addresses, the floor, whether there is a lift, and whether a truck can get into the lane.
- Get quotes from at least 3 movers and ask for them in writing or by message.
- Ask whether the quote includes labour, the truck, packing, dismantling and reassembly, and the fee for carrying items to upper floors.
Terms to ask about
- Fixed price or hourly rate.
- Compensation if items are damaged or lost.
- Whether a deposit is required and how it is refunded.
- Extra fees for waiting time or a change of schedule.
Moving-day checklist
- ☐ Photograph valuable items before they are packed.
- ☐ Record the electricity and water meter readings at the old and new places; see setting up electricity, water and internet.
- ☐ Check the condition of the old place before you hand it back, so you get your deposit back.
- ☐ Register your residence again at the new address; see temporary residence registration (foreign residents: see the section for foreigners in that post).
Frequently asked questions
Should I move myself or hire a full-service mover?
If you have few belongings, renting a vehicle and asking friends to help can be cheaper. With a lot of belongings or an upper floor, a full-service move carries less risk.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as possible, especially at the end of the month and around holidays.
A comparison of real quotes will be added when we have the data.
